Umrah is a prayer mentioned in the Holy Qur'an together with Hajj, and performing it at least once in a lifetime is considered a sunnah. The word "Umra" means "Pilgrimage and Prosperity".
In the Qur'an, it is blessed: "Perform Hajj and Umrah for the sake of Allah." Allah Almighty orders Muslims to fulfill the conditions of Hajj and Umrah, to avoid external and internal defects during worship.
Unlike Hajj, Umrah is not obligatory. Our Prophet (pbuh) said that the pilgrimage of Umrah is an atonement for the sins of those who perform it for the sake of Allah.
The following actions are performed during the Umrah prayer:
- Ihram is tied;
- The Kaaba is circumambulated;
- An effort is made between Safo and Marwa;
- The hair is shortened or completely removed.
When is Umrah performed?
Umrah pilgrimage can be performed at any time of the year, there is no specific time for it. It is makruh to perform Umrah only on the eve, Eid al-Adha and the three days after that. Therefore, on these days, Hajj arches are performed.
The best time for Umrah is the month of Ramadan. Our Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said the following about Umrah performed in the month of Ramadan: "Umrah in Ramadan is equal to the Hajj performed with me" (Narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim).
How is Umrah different from Hajj?
1. Hajj is an obligatory act, and Umrah is a sunnah;
2. There is no fixed time for performing Umrah;
3. Umrah is not waqf on Arafat;
4. There is no standing in Muzdalifah during Umrah;
5. Do not throw stones at Satan during Umrah;
6. In Umrah, there is no need to combine two prayers;
7. Qudum (visit) is not performed during Umrah;
8. Farewell circumambulation is not performed in Umrah.
Umrah is a great prayer, and pilgrims who perform it are considered guests of God.
